About The Program

The Criminal Justice and Public Policy (CJPP) program demonstrates to students the intersection of law, public policy, and social and criminal justice. Graduates of the program are well versed in the subfields of public policy, criminal justice, the Canadian court and legal system, and social justice and have a critical understanding of how addressing the political and sociological issue of crime can improve life.

CJPP students have a wide range of interests and skills that can be applied in many workplaces including government and non-governmental organizations, non-profit and community-based organizations, and the private sector.

Why Co-op?

As a co-op student, you will be able to gain relevant work experience, build professional networks, and develop essential transferable skills needed to succeed in the workplace, all while getting paid and earning your university degree. Guelph’s co-op program is unique due to the exceptional level of support provided to students, including a job search preparatory course, a personal connection with a Co-op Coordinator to assist you during the employment process, and targeted work term reports to help you develop relevant skills.

Communication

Communicate effectively, accurately and professionally, in traditional and innovative written and oral forms, including visual and technological.

Problem-Solving

Develop and practice intellectual curiosity, analytic, problem-solving, decision-making and listening skills.

Engage in respectful, reciprocal and mutually-beneficial ways with people at the local, national and/or global levels to advocate for and advance equity and social justice.

Demonstrate leadership, teamwork, accountability, personal organization and time management.

Application

Specialized skills in legal research and a clear understanding of legal processes in Canada and in a global context. Gain a deeper understanding of the legal landscapes behind issues such as immigration, racial and gender inequality, and free speech.

Sample Jobs

Junior Policy Analyst

Conduct research and analysis to support policy review and development. Support program implementation and the preparation of reports and presentations for management. Support stakeholder engagement and provincial consultation exercises.

Crime Analyst

Data cleansing and compilation of crime data. Analysis of crime, collision, and enforcement data to assist in developing proactive initiatives to enhance public safety. Reading and summarization of crime occurrences into databases.

Policy Student

Conduct research and analysis to inform policy development. Prepare briefing notes, presentations, and other documents for management. Employ innovative approaches to policy development. Assist and support various projects, program evaluation, and studies to help advance ministry priorities.

Legal and Risk Operations Intern

Provide primarily technical support to the Legal & Risk Operations team, including the development of various spreadsheets and technical tools to support the quantitative and analytical work of the team’s legal counsel and compliance officers. This role will have exposure to the areas of securities law regulation, broker-dealer litigation, and corporate/commercial law.

Salary Information

Students receive compensation from their employer for co-op work terms. The rate of pay will vary depending on a number of factors including the industry, the student’s program of study, and work term level. For your reference, a Cooperative Education Salary Guide is available on our website, which provides hourly rates (averages and ranges) for each degree program.
