Research Abroad | Guelph Students
Explore a range of summer research opportunities outside of Canada that would allow you to work closely with faculty mentors, strengthen your research skills, and expand your academic experience. This page provides an overview of available options, eligibility requirements, and key steps to help you plan and prepare for a meaningful summer research opportunity.
Students should only submit one Summer Research Program Application.
Provincial Summer Research Programs
The ORA and OBW provincial programs offer summer research programs during which students engage in research supervised by a professor at one of the participating host universities in that country. Students may be able to receive University of Guelph credit for these programs if they find a University of Guelph professor to supervise and mark them for an independent research course (speak to a Academic Advisor for more information). Students may also be able to use the research program as a Co-op work term if approved by Co-op & Career Services.
Students should only submit one Summer Research Program Application.
ORA Summer Research Programs, France
The Ontario/Rhône-Alpes Student Exchange Program offers research opportunities for students in Science, Engineering and Health Sciences through the ORA Summer Research Program. Detailed information is available on the ORA Summer Research Program website.
Students do not need to speak French for this program if they find a mentoring professor who is willing to supervise their research in English. Students must be nominated by a University of Guelph professor for this program and must find a professor at a participating Rhône Alpes university to supervise their research. OBW Summer Research Program, Germany
The Ontario/Baden-Württemberg Summer Research Program offers research opportunities for students in Science, Engineering and Health Sciences through the OBW Summer Research Program. Detailed information is available on the OBW Summer Research Program website.
Students do not have to speak German for this program. Students must be nominated by a University of Guelph professor for this program and must find a professor at a participating Baden-Wurttemberg university to supervise their research. (Contact goabroad@uoguelph.ca if you are unsure where to start when looking for a supervising professor.)
International Summer Research Programs
University of Bremen, Germany
Students may apply to do research under the supervision of a University of Bremen professor during any semester(s). Students in any field of study offered at the university are eligible to apply. Students do not have to speak German for this program. The majority of these placements happen during the Summer semester. However, for placements in Fall or Winter, please email the Centre for International Programs to inquire about deadlines.
University of Hohenheim, Germany
Students may apply to do research under the supervision of a University of Hohenheim professor during any semester(s). Students in any field of study offered at the university are eligible to apply. Students do not have to speak German for this program. The majority of these placements happen during the Summer semester. University of Konstanz, Germany
Supervisor: students must try to identify a faculty supervisor, however, if they are unable to find one, the international office at UKonstanz may be able to help direct students to the appropriate faculty. University of Lavras, Brazil

University of Liverpool, England
Guelph students can apply to participate in a Liverpool professor's research project during the Summer semester. In the past, projects have been available in (but may change from year to year): Architecture, Engineering, Environmental Science, Computer Science, History, Languages & Cultures, Law & Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Psychology.
Applicants must have a 73% cumulative average. Here is a list of the research projects students can apply to work on.
Mitacs
Mitacs offers a number of research internship opportunities in a variety of countries. For undergraduate students, the Globalink Research Award provides funding for 12- to -24 week research projects abroad, and the RISE-Globalink Research Internship provides funding for 10- to 12-week research project in Germany. There are also other MITACS research programs for graduate students.
RISE Globalink Research Internship (RISE-GRI)
The RISE-Globalink Research Internship (RISE-GRI) is a competitive initiative that offers undergraduate students at Canadian universities in the fields of biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, earth science, and physics the opportunity to participate in a research project supervised by a doctoral student at a German university or institution. GRI pairs students at Canadian Universities with three-month summer projects supervised by PhD students in Germany. Approved recipients receive $6,000 toward travel and accommodations. You can see the list of RISE research projects here. Students must apply for the RISE-GRI through Mitacs. The deadline is usually mid-December. If you have any questions, contact rise-germany@daad.de
Registering Other International Research Opportunities
If you have arranged to complete research for your degree outside of Canada, separate from the programs CIP offers, you will need to register with the Centre for International Programs. This means two things: you must complete the DepartSmart pre-departure orientation on CourseLink, and purchase GuardMe Travel Insurance.
