This page will help you navigate the waste resources in the city of Guelph. It may be similar, or different from the garbage removal system you’re used to. Make sure that you understand how to sort your garbage and when it gets picked up. Waste sorting is important because it can reduce the amount of waste that ends up in the landfill and having your garbage picked up on time will help you keep your home and neighbourhood clean.

How to Sort Your Garbage

Guelph has a 3-stream waste collection that works well once you understand it.

  • The green bin is for all compostable kitchen and yard waste.
  • The blue bin is for recyclables such as metal cans and glass jars, paper, and newsprint, and some plastics.
  • The grey bin is for items that do not go in the blue or green bin, like non-recyclable plastics, textiles, or non-compostable items.

Once you have sorted your items and know your pick-up day, simply place your bins at the curb after 7 p.m. the night before your pick-up day, with the latch side facing the curb and at least 1 meter apart. Bring bins back to your house promptly after collection.

If you're not sure how to dispose of something, just look it up on the City of Guelph’s Waste Wizard. Every neighbourhood has a scheduled garbage pick-up day; the Waste Wizard can also help you find your scheduled day.
