How to Apply to the Master of Applied Nutrition

Log into or create an account for the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) to begin the initial online application for the University of Guelph.

Read and follow the instructions in the OUAC application very carefully. Enter all applicable information except for the Statement of Academic Intent and the Professional Background sections, which are not required for the MAN program.

Select the program Family Relations and Applied Nutrition, Master of Applied Nutrition.

After choosing the MAN program, select full-time under Expected Course Enrollment. MAN is only offered as a full-time program.

You will also be asked if you have communicated with a graduate faculty member. This question is designed for conventional thesis-based graduate programs. MAN applicants are asked not to contact faculty prior to application and should select NO for this question.

You do not need to complete the Statement of Academic Intent on this page.

You have the option of ordering official (sealed) transcripts through OUAC for a fee. This is not required as we accept unofficial transcripts uploaded to WebAdvisor in Step 2.

An official copy of your transcript is only required if you accept an offer of admission.

If your first language is not English and this will be your first time completing a degree in the English language, you will be required to submit the results of a standardized language test.

If your first language is not English but you have completed prior post-secondary studies in English, contact man.grad@uoguelph.ca to see if you are eligible to have the test requirement waived.

You will need a total of three references to apply to MAN – one academic reference, one professional reference, and your choice of one additional academic OR professional reference.

Provide contact information for each reference. An email is automatically sent to the referee listed, so ensure that you have entered the correct email address.

IMPORTANT: Your professional referee should be an employer or registered dietitian who knows how you perform in a work environment. They may select "Unable to Judge" for required fields that are academic-based, but you must instruct them to comment on the following four skills in the free text space at the bottom of the form:

1. Teamwork Skills – applicant collaborates with others to provide good client service.
2. Response to Feedback – applicant strives for excellence through self-reflection. Applicant is receptive and utilizes feedback from others.
3. Application of Knowledge – applicant applies knowledge gained (from experience, judgement, and reference to approved resources) to various situations.
4. Time Management and Organizational Skills – applicant manages time and workload effectively to meet deadlines.

After entering and verifying all required information, complete the application fee payment.

A non-refundable application fee of $120 CAD is required for each program/field you apply to.

Calculating your admission average

Upload an unofficial academic transcript from each higher education institution you have attended.

• An official copy of your transcript is only required if you accept an offer of admission.
• Transcripts requested through OUAC will be automatically uploaded to your account. If you request an official transcript through OUAC, do not upload an unofficial copy of the same transcript to WebAdvisor.

Upload a CV to "Resume/CV." Ensure all your relevant research, volunteer and employment experience is listed and described in detail.

Do your best to estimate the total number of hours you worked/volunteered for each experience and include that information in your CV.

Write a 2-3 page statement outlining your interest in pursuing graduate study. Upload the document to "Statement of Research." Answer the following questions in your statement (question #4 is optional):

1. Why were you drawn to studying applied human nutrition and becoming a dietitian?
2. How will your past experiences and skills support your success in the MAN program?
3. Each MAN cohort is unique and is influenced by the life experiences that each student brings. Personally, how will you contribute to academic and professional growth of students in your cohort?
4. Optional: if your initials were an acronym, what would it stand for and how would it reflect your strengths and personality?

If you graduated from an undergraduate program accredited by EQual/Accreditation Canada or ACEND more than three years ago, you will be required to submit a Level 1 KCAT result. The Level 1 KCAT result must be submitted by supplemental documents deadline. No exceptions will be considered.

Submit your result by email to the Graduate Program Assistant at man.grad@uoguelph.ca. Applicants who have completed their undergraduate degree within the past three years are not required to write the KCAT.

The University Program Director of your EQual/Accreditation Canada-accredited program¹ must complete your school's Confirmation of Completion of Academic Program form, confirming that you have completed all coursework required for your accredited undergraduate degree.

¹If you graduated from a program accredited by ACEND, you will have a verification statement instead of a program completion form.

There are three variables that are considered and balanced in arranging placements for students in the Classic MAN Stream:

1. Experiences available from community partners
2. The learning needs of the whole cohort
3. The learning needs of an individual student

A matrix of possible placements is created. Combinations of three experiences from different community partners are grouped into learning pathways that will allow a student to meet the Integrated Competencies. These learning pathways are presented to and discussed with the MAN cohort. MAN students are asked to identity and explain their top four learning pathways. Following discussion with each individual student, the learning pathways are assigned.

Due to the workload from courses and practica, working while in the MAN program is not recommended.

Some MAN students have worked a limited number of hours while in the program to suit their needs.

No, there are no exams as part of the courses MAN students take.

Calculate your admission average using your grades from the final two years of full-time equivalent study (4-6 semesters) of your previous degree.

For the typical bachelor's degree, this will be 20 0.5 credit weight courses, but you'll need a minimum of 16 courses in your calculation. If you took a double weight (1.0 credits) course, that grade is counted twice.

You must also include the grade from each course you completed in a given semester (i.e. do not split a semester).

If your transcript uses letter grades, look up your university's grading scale and convert the letters to percentage grades.

No, the only courses that are included in your average are those with a final grade on your transcripts.

References are a critical component of any application to graduate school and to external awards bodies. The following guidelines will help you through the process:

• Choose faculty carefully
  • First approach faculty who have taught you in third and fourth year courses
  • Ask whether the faculty member can provide you with a strong reference
  • References from assistant, associate or full professors are generally preferred at most institutions
• Request references early
  • Allow at least 3 weeks for faculty to complete references
• Information to provide about yourself
  • Remind the professor of the program you are in and the course(s) you have taken with them (include course code and semester)
  • Brief summary of your key strengths that you think should be emphasized. Highlight any outstanding accomplishments in the course(s) taught by this faculty member
  • Unofficial transcript
  • Draft of your statement of research
• Information to provide about the program
  • Brief description of the program and link to the program website
  • Deadline for receipt of the reference form
• Confirmation
