Bringing Foundations into Practice with Applied Professional Sexuality Practices

To continue the University of Guelph’s longstanding commitment to sexuality education, OpenEd is pleased to launch the Applied Professional Sexuality Practices (APSP) course, taught by Dr. Markie Twist. This advanced offering builds on the Foundations in Professional Sexuality Practices (FPSP) course, offering an exploration of the application of theory and research in sex therapy, counseling, and education practices.

“A significant part of the focus is on sexual health assessments, demonstrating understanding of affirming practices and clinical interventions for a range of common and complex sexuality-related individual and relational presenting problems,” says Dr. Markie. “This course is really a part two to the Foundations course or Intensive Sex Therapy Training Program (ISTTP)—anyone who has successfully completed either or both and is seeking more solid training in the area of professional sexuality practices would benefit from the advanced learning offered.”

Both FPSP and APSP were developed in response to the growing demand for advanced sexuality education that fulfills the requirement for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from accreditation bodies such as the American Association for Sexuality Educators, counselors, and Therapists (AASECT). Completion of both courses provides students with 64 CEUs, surpassing the minimum 60 credits needed for an AASECT certification.

While this may be a new approach to providing quality sexuality education, one notable feature remains consistent across programming: the Guelph Sexpert Series.

“One of the unparalleled aspects of being a current, former, and/or future student of our Guelph sexuality programs is access to the sexpert series,” says Dr. Markie. “We continue to have sexperts from Canada and across the globe share their knowledge and expertise, an experience that students may not otherwise have. And something we’re also proud to offer is ongoing access to the sexpert series even after your time in our program comes to an end!”

The thoughtful design of the APSP course allows students to intentionally apply the material in real-time through role plays, practice exercises, and small group work, which enhances the overall learning experience. This deliberate content delivery also prepares students for situations they will likely encounter in the real world.

“These courses are essential for working with people across professional contexts,” explains Dr. Markie. “Sexuality is such a common concern—a basic need for many humans—and we as professionals need to foster a safe space for people to be vulnerable, talk about, or get assistance with their sexual health needs.”
