From Basics to Fluency: An Inside Look at Teaching English as a Second Language

In our efforts to highlight the stories of our international students, we often overlook the dedicated educators who play a crucial role in shaping their experiences. At the University of Guelph (U of G), one such educator is Samantha Burns, a seasoned instructor in the English Language Programs (ELP) who has been empowering students for nearly two decades.

Samantha’s journey at U of G began 18 years ago when she joined the ELP with a strong academic foundation. Holding an Honours BA in Linguistics and an M.Ed. from Brock University, as well as TESL Ontario Certification, she brings a wealth of knowledge and passion for teaching. Over the years, she has primarily taught in the English Language Certificate Program (ELCP), one of several programs and pathways that support students in improving their English language skills and advancing toward their academic goals.

But Samantha’s role goes beyond academics. The ELP community offers a welcoming and engaging environment where students can build friendships and improve their conversational English. “It’s not all about the classroom,” she says. “Our students experience a unique cultural exchange and form lasting friendships with peers from around the world. Alongside their studies, they participate in social activities such as day trips, ice skating, canoeing, and cookie decorating.”

These day trips take students to popular destinations like Niagara Falls, the St. Lawrence Market and Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, and sometimes even a Blue Jays game—giving them a chance to explore the richness of Canadian culture.

When asked what she loves most about her job, Samantha reflects, “What I love is that it’s not just about teaching—it’s also about learning. I’m constantly discovering new things about my students' cultures and languages. It’s a two-way process, and that exchange is inspiring every day.”

The most rewarding part of teaching, according to Samantha, is seeing the "a-ha" moments—the instant when a student finally grasps a challenging concept. “It’s so rewarding when you explain something in a way that clicks for a student, and they say, ‘I’ve been trying to understand this for years, and now I finally get it.’ Those moments make all the hard work worth it.”

Samantha’s passion for teaching, learning, and building a vibrant international community is a testament to the heart and soul of the English Language Programs at the University of Guelph.
