The Research Innovation Office is dedicated to helping University of Guelph faculty, postdocs, staff and students cultivate a robust knowledge base and acquire skill sets necessary to propel their research endeavours along the innovation pathway.

To help University of Guelph faculty, postdocs, staff and students better understand how to manage and benefit from their intellectual property (IP), our Technology Transfer Team is available to answer specific questions related to IP derived from U of G research programs. In addition to one-on-one meetings and discussions, the Research Innovation Office has made a foundational intellectual properties education module available to members of the U of G campus community via CourseLink (instructions provided below.)

This module, which is derived with permission from a similar module created by the University of Toronto and the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, is intended to equip students, faculty, and staff with a broad foundation in intellectual property and its general application in today’s knowledge economy. This module introduces the basics of IP and related topics like patents, trademarks, copyright and trade secrets, and will learn to recognize the value of IP, how to take steps to protect it, and what resources are available at U of G.

The module is organized into three units, which together will take approximately three hours to complete. The units involve reading and comprehension of written content, videos and short quizzes to assess understanding and application of the concepts introduced. A short cumulative quiz and reflective survey wrap up the course, at which time participants will be awarded a certificate of completion.

1. Login to Courselink (U of G Central Login required)
2. Select 'Self Registration' from the top navigation bar
3. Select 'Intellectual Property Education Program - Foundations' under course offerings.
4. Fill out and submit the registration form.

Skills for Research Impact is a workshop series, typically offered in fall and winter semesters, for faculty, research staff and graduate students interested in enhancing the impact of their research. Through sessions facilitated by impact experts, participants will learn how to successfully plan, execute and evaluate knowledge mobilization (or knowledge translation and transfer) activities. Sessions cover topics key to effective research communications and engagement of non-academic audiences, including policy, industry and community stakeholders.

Our office was pleased to work alongside several Ontario Universities as part of an Ontario research collaboration to develop a comprehensive series of learning modules. This resulted in the Knowledge Management and Communications Course designed for students and early career researchers and funded by eCampusOntario. It serves as a valuable resource for use in professional development and/or micro-credential programs and is also available for download.

In collaboration with the Research Innovation Office, The Arrell Food Institute developed a series of Spotlight projects. These interdisciplinary projects delved into timely and topical issues central to our food systems. The series comprised of workshops, concise papers, and multimedia content, brought together experts to develop recommendations. These insights aid decision-makers in charting the next steps on intricate subjects, providing a deep exploration of the overarching, complex challenges faced by the agriculture and agri-food sector. The Waterloo Wellington Knowledge Mobilization (KMb) Community of Practice is an informal group of knowledge mobilization professionals, faculty and students seeking to share best practices, develop new skills, and connect with peers. Committed to bridging the gasp between the best available evidence and practice, our focus is on the exchange of resources and ideas, building a robust community dedicated to advancing Knowledge Translation and Transfer (KTT) and KMb.

The Community of Practice meets regularly throughout the year and maintains an email listserv to share resources and events. Join us as we collectively contribute to the strength and progression of KTT/KMb knowledge within our community.
