The Black Farmer Grounding Symposium was created by OVC's Dr. Andria Jones and U of G Adjunct Professor Dr. Marsha Myrie Obi, in response to a long described history of extractive research in Black farming communities; researchers gather knowledge from Black farmers, but do not share their findings or work to build lasting relationships. Jones and Obi hoped that this event would return knowledge, facilitate open dialogue and build meaningful relationships between Black farming communities and researchers. Supported by multiple external partners and colleges at U of G, the Symposium garnered attendants from Ottawa, Nova Scotia, British Columbia and across Ontario.
